Doppler ultrasound blood flow test. Doctor using a Doppler ultrasound device to assess blood flow in a patient's dorsalis pedis artery, the dorsal artery of the foot. This is known as the pedal pulse. The presence or absence of this pulse is an indicator of the quality of the blood supply to the tissues of the lower leg and foot. Ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) from a transducer are reflected by body tissues. These echoes are detected and used to build an image of structures inside the body. Doppler ultrasound is used to analyse moving fluids such as blood. Photographed in a hospital intensive care unit (ICU).
