Azurite mineral sample. This mineral is a hydrated copper carbonate, with the chemical formula Cu3. The mineral's name refers to its colour, and is related to the word azure, used to describe deep blue skies. In medieval times, the mineral was ground up and used by painters as a blue pigment. Azurite's colour also makes it popular with mineral collectors.
