Mine-laying ship. Historical photograph of a British naval mine-laying vessel during World War I. The spherical mines were arranged in double rows projecting out over the water, and were dropped in strings as the vessel sailed along. During World War I, mines were used extensively to defend coasts, coastal shipping, ports and naval bases.
