Swollen knee (right) in a 63-year-old man. This is an acute swelling known as an effusion. An effusion is the accumulation of fluid in a joint, usually due to injury. This patient has osteoarthritis, which makes him more susceptible to developing an effusion, since osteoarthritis causes an excessive production of synovial fluid in the joints. Treatment is by resting the affected area.
