Caption

Eye abscesses on the upper eyelid of a 40-year-old woman. These are chalazion, or meibomian cysts, which arise when the meibomian glands become blocked. Chalazions are usually painless and often disappear without treatment. However, in this case, the cysts have become infected, causing them to turn into abscesses (white and yellow). Abscesses are collections of pus formed from destroyed tissue and dead infection-fighting white blood cells. These would be treated with antibiotics.
