Antiproton trap. View of the inner section of a trap for antiprotons, the antimatter equivalent of protons. The antiprotons are initially slowed by a modified cyclotron unit and captured by a larger, outer trap. The antiprotons may then be bunched closer together by magnetic fields until they are fed into this inner trap. Held captive by the magnetic fields, the antiprotons are kept away from the sides of the trap; they would otherwise annihilate with protons in the metal. The trap is held at a high vacuum to minimise collisions with gas atoms. This trap was designed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA, and used at CERN, the European particle physics lab.
