Illustration showing the formation of a caldera. Stage 1 (top left), a full magma chamber under pressure causes eruption. Stage 2 (top right), the magma chamber is now partially emptied and pressure is released. Stage 3 (bottom left), volcano collapses into top of the magma chamber beginning to form the caldera. Stage 4 (bottom right), large crater forms with a steep rim and fills with water.
