Ileostomy. Close-up of an ileostomy in the abdomen of a patient, with an ostomy bag attached. An ileostomy is where part of the ileum (small intestine) is brought through an incision in the abdominal wall and formed into an external artificial anus called a stoma (red, centre). This is then connected to an ostomy bag that collects the bowel contents when they are expelled through the stoma. An ileostomy can be temporary or permanent, and is carried out when part of the small intestine has to be removed.
