Bowel surgery. Close-up of the abdomen of a patient with an open laparotomy wound (centre) and ileostomy (top) being cleaned. A gastric feeding tube can also bee seen at bottom right. Laparotomy is a surgical procedure involving a large incision through the abdominal wall to gain access into the abdominal cavity. An ileostomy is where part of the ileum (small intestine) is brought through an incision in the abdominal wall and formed into an external artificial anus called a stoma (red, upper centre). This is then connected to an ostomy bag (not shown) that collects the bowel contents when they are expelled through the stoma.
