Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) in flower, in cultivation primarily for cochineal production. The cochineal bugs (Dactylopius coccus) are small white scale insects that grow on the paddles of the cacti. The insects are crushed to obtain the natural red dye carmine.
