Morphine. Molecular graphic of morphine, a pain- killing (analgesic) drug. It is an addictive alka- loid derived from opium. Morphine contains carbon (yellow, C), hydrogen (blue, H), oxygen (red, O) & nitrogen (not seen here, N). It has the chemical formula C17H19NO3. Morphine has a similar struct- ure to the body's own opiate painkillers, known as endorphins or enkephalins, and occupies the same nerve receptor sites. The use of morphine brings a feeling of pleasure and euphoria. However, the body develops tolerance quickly and more drug is needed to achieve the same effect. Side effects of addiction include malnutrition, respiratory complications and low blood pressure.
