Caption

Glomerulus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through kidney tissue, showing part of a glomerulus. Glomeruli filter waste products from the blood. This occurs through the narrow slits between interlocking pedicles - branching processes on the podocyte cells that encase the glomerular surface. Fenestrated endothelium (purple) lines the capillaries ( containing red blood cells) and is separated from the podocytes (yellow) by a basement membrane (orange). Magnification x3000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
