Differential interference contrast (DIC) light micrograph of the resting, or cyst, phase of Haematococcus pluvialis chlorophytes, a type of green algae. They contain the pigment astaxanthin (red), an anti oxidant and important ingredient in cosmetics. H. pluvialis are commonly found in temperate areas worldwide. Magnification: x250 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
