Light micrograph of a phantom midge larva (Chaoborus sp.). Also known as the ghost midge or glassworm, the aquatic larval form of this midge is transparent. It has air sacs at the front (right) and the rear of its body to regulate buoyancy. It preys on waterfleas and other small animals. Magnification: x8 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
