Light micrograph of the head (top) and tail (bottom) of a phantom midge larva (Chaoborus sp.). Also known as the ghost midge or glassworm, the aquatic larval form of this midge is transparent. It has air sacs at the front and the rear of its body to regulate buoyancy. It preys on waterfleas and other small animals. Magnification: x18 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
