Collision at sea between the steam collier 'Bywell Castle' and the pleasure steamer 'Princess Alice' on the Thames estuary in 1878. The 'Princess Alice' sank within 4 minutes of the collision. Over 650 people lost their lives, many below decks, making it the greatest ever maritime disaster on the Thames.
