Anandamide and cannabinoid receptor. CB1 is a cell membrane receptor found mainly in the nervous system. Anandamide is a natural cannabinoid neurotransmitter produced by the body. The binding of anandamide to the receptor induces cellular responses inside the cell. Anandamide plays a role in memory, regulating feeding behaviour and motivation. CB1 receptors also bind tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the principle psychoactive compound in the drug cannabis.
