Light micrograph of the pleurostomatid ciliate Loxophyllum meleagris. This huge ciliate is about 400 µm long and easily recognizable by the moniliform macronuleus and the curious toxicyst warts, shown here at the upper side of the animal. Loxophyllum is a predatory ciliate, majestically gliding on the surface of benthic habitats. Microscopic contrast technique : Differential interference contrast. Magnification 200x when printed 10 centimetres wide.
