Celestial sphere, conceptual image. In astronomy, the celestial sphere is an imaginary globe, centred on the Earth, of arbitrarily large size. Objects in the sky – stars, the Sun and the planets – can all be thought of as projected onto the inside of this sphere. The ecliptic (yellow) is the path across the sky followed by the Sun and the planets.
