Caption

CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector, computer model. This is a detector at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. It is being built around part of the LHC, a 27-kilometre-long underground ring. Proton beams will be accelerated by the LHC to pass along the axis of the cylinder and collide head-on. The collision energy will create new particles that will decay into other particles. These will be detected by layers that include an electromagnetic calorimeter (orange), a hadron calorimeter (blue) and muon detector layers (red). The CMS will be 22 metres long & 15 metres wide. The LHC should start operating in 2007.
