Geographic tongue. Close-up of the mouth of a 56-year-old female patient with geographic tongue. This inflammatory condition affects the upper surface of the tongue and is usually characterised by areas of smooth red depapillation (loss of lingual papillae, bumps) which migrate over time. The cause is unknown, but it is entirely benign and there is no cure.
