Earwig, illustration. Earwigs (order Dermaptera) can be found on every continent except Antarctica. These insects are nocturnal, spending the day in moist, dark cavities. The earliest fossils of earwigs were found in sediments from the late Triassic (about 208 million years) in England and Australia.
