Carcinoma of the cervix, colposcopy. Carcinoma of the cervix is one of the most common cancers affecting women. Cervical carcinoma has well-defined pre-cancerous stages and cervical smears can detect abnormal changes in the cells on the surface of the cervix before any cancer appears. Pre-cancerous stages cause no symptoms, and once malignant, vaginal bleeding may occur at unexpected times of the menstrual cycle. If left untreated the cancer can spread to deeper parts of the cervix and surrounding tissues. Treatments include laser surgery, diathermy and cryosurgery.
