Caption

Genital warts on the cervix, colposcopy. The cervix has been treated with acetic acid to detect abnormalities in the epithelium, and the warts appear pale in colour. Genital warts (also known as condyloma acuminata) are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. There are many types of HPV. HPV types 6 and 11 commonly cause genital warts. Infection is through direct contact, usually during penetrative sex. While some types of HPV cause cervical cancer and anal cancers, these are not the same types of HPV that cause genital warts. HPV infection of the skin in the genital area is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide.
