Pulmonary fibrosis in sarcoidosis. Frontal X-ray of the chest of a 48-year-old male patient with pulmonary fibrosis (scarring) caused by sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body's cells, resulting in many small, inflamed swellings (granulomas). The condition can resolve spontaneously, or heal with residual scarring. In the lungs, this scarring can impair breathing. Sarcoidosis is not usually life-threatening, and symptoms vary widely.
