Pneumococcal pneumonia. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan of a section through the chest of a 63-year-old male patient with severe pneumococcal pneumonia affecting the left lung (right). Pneumococcal pneumonia is a form of pneumonia caused by infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) bacteria. In bacterial pneumonia, the pathogen is inhaled into the lung segments, or lobes, where it causes the alveoli (air sacs) to become blocked with pus. Treatment is with antibiotics.
