Caption

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Close-up of the right eye of a patient with purulent acute bacterial conjunctivitis and pus on the cornea. Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane covering the white of the eye. Treatment is by avoiding the cause and treatment with antihistamines. In this case, the cause is a bacterial infection. A purulent condition is one where pus is produced, an exudate formed during an infection. An acute condition (as opposed to a chronic one) is one with a sudden onset, usually of a relatively short duration.
