Caption

Ciprofloxacin antibiotic molecule. Computer model of a molecule of ciprofloxacin, a broad spectrum antibiotic. Atoms are represented as rods and are colour-coded; carbon (light blue), hydrogen (white), oxygen (red), nitrogen (dark blue) and fluorine (green). Ciprofloxacin kills bacteria by binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase, which prevents DNA replication and so kills the cell. It is used to treat lower respiratory and urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases and septicaemia.
