Caption

Fluorescence light micrograph of plasmatocytes (red) from a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) with Escherichia coli bacteria (green). Plasmatocytes are a cell of the fruit fly's immune system. They are phagocytes, that is they engulf pathogens and foreign objects and destroy them. Plasmatocytes measure between 5 to 7 micrometres across.
