This even-toed ungulate mammal is the tallest living land animal and the largest ruminant. It can grow to a height of 5.5 metres and weigh over a tonne. Feeding mainly on the twigs and leaves of trees, it is found on the grasslands and scrublands of sub-Saharan Africa. The giraffe's circulatory system has adaptations related to its long neck and legs that enable it to feed on leaves that other animals cannot reach.
