Caption

Launching V-2 sounding rocket, New Mexico, USA. Footage of the launch of a V-2 rocket carrying a camera that returned views of the Earth from an altitude of up to 122 kilometres. The launch took place from White Sands Proving Ground, New Mexico, USA, on 17 February 1950. The V-2 rockets, originally developed by Nazi Germany, were used by the USA after World War II, both to aid the development of new rockets, and as sounding rockets to study the Earth's atmosphere. For the camera installation, see clip K005/3110. For in-flight footage, see clip K005/3111.
