Caption

Rings of Uranus, animation. Animation showing a flight through the particles making up one of the rings of Uranus. The rings of Uranus are very dark and not visible from Earth. There are 13 rings in total. Most of the rings are only a few kilometres wide, and no more that a couple of hundred metre thick. They consist of countless individual sooty fragments, probably composed of water ice with the addition of some dark radiation-processed organic material. The particles range in size from 20 centimetres to 2 metres across. Surprisingly little dust is present.
