Paramecium protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a unicellular (single-celled) Paramecium sp. ciliate protozoan. It is covered in numerous cilia, hair-like structures that it beats for propulsion, and to waft food particles into its mouth. It inhabits fresh water and feeds mainly on bacteria and smaller protozoa. Magnification: x400 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
