Caption

Vaginal bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of rod-shaped bacteria (red) on the vaginal wall. Some bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, are harmless and form the predominant natural fauna in the vagina. Others, such as Gardnerella vaginalis, are pathogenic and result in vaginitis, the inflammation of the vagina characterised by a foul discharge.
