Launch of the Sentinel-2B satellite. Illustration of the fairing separation during the launch of the Sentinel-2B satellite (here enclosed in foil, yellow) on a Vega VV09 rocket. This launch took place on 7 March 2017 UTC (6 March local time) from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Sentinel 2-B is part of Europe's environmental monitoring Copernicus programme. It combines high-resolution and new multi-spectral capabilities for monitoring the Earth. A related satellite, Sentinel-2A, was launched on 23 June 2015. These satellites are helping to improve agricultural practices, the monitoring of forests, the detection of pollution in lakes and coastal waters, and disaster mapping. Image published in March 2017.
