Century Carolingian woman. Carolingian Empire (800-888 AD), wearing traditional dress of the time. The Carolingian dynasty was a Frankish noble family with origins in the Arnulfing and Pippinid clans of the 7th century AD. Charlemagne (Charles the Great, circa 742-814), King of the Franks, expanded the Frankish state to found the Carolingian Empire.
