Pulmonary tuberculosis is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which creates primary tubercles (nodular lesions of dead tissue and bacteria) when inhaled into the lungs. Symptoms include fever, weight loss and the coughing up of blood. Treatment is with long-term antibiotics.
