The white rhino (Ceratotherium simum) is an animal of the African plains and savannahs. Its wide mouth has evolved to mow grasses. They prefer to drink at least once a day and can drink up to 50 litres at a time but the average is 12 litres a day. The penis faces posteriorly and, while sub-adult and subordinate bulls urinate normally, a territorial bull urinates a powerful spray to define boundary markers. Urine may have a milky appearance. During mating the penis is re-directed into the conventional forward position. Hippos are also retromingent - urinate backwards - but as they are not closely related it is an example of convergent evolution. Photographed inLille zoological park, France.
