Spectral images of an energy-saving fluorescent light bulb seen through a rotating dual-axis diffraction grating. A diffraction grating is a piece of equipment that splits light into its component wavelengths. It is made of a series of very fine closely-spaced lines, whose spacing is close to the wavelengths of the light. Fluorescent lights do not have an even spectral range of colours, and are strongest in red, green and blue-violet.
