Girl with growth disorder. Although this girl is 11-years-old, she is just 1.2 metres tall. Dystchondrosteosis is a rare genetic condition, caused by mutations in the SHOX gene found on the X and Y chromosomes. It is characterised by mesomelic dwarfism (shortened forearms and legs) and bowing of the bones. Treatment is by injection of growth hormone such as genotropin, which ceases at puberty. Dyschondrosteosis is also known as Leri-Weill syndrome.
