Torpedoed ship in World War I. British transport ship sinking at an unknown location after being torpedoed by a German submarine. During World War I (1914-1918) German U-boats (submarines) were used to attack merchant shipping in an attempt to starve the Allies. In the Atlantic U-boat campaign of World War I, German U-boats sank over 8 millions tons of shipping and around 4000 ships. Photograph by International Film Service.
