Predicting asteroid impact, computer artwork. The screen overlay shows the first successful prediction of an asteroid impact. On 6 October 2008, scientists calculated that a small asteroid (2008 TC3), which had just been sighted that night, would impact the Earth on 7 October over Sudan, at 02:46 UTC, 05:46 local time. The asteroid arrived as predicted. Large asteroids (over a kilometre across) are rare (millions of years apart), but can cause mass loss of life worldwide.
