Spiny spider. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a spiny spider (Gasteracantha sp.), showing its characteristic spines (red) and large mouthparts (grey, centre left). Spiny spiders are only 4-10 millimetres across and live mainly in secondary tropical forests. They have a hard, flat body armed with three pairs of spines on the edge of the abdomen (yellow). Magnification: x6 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
