A pycnometer or specific gravity bottle is used to determine the density of a liquid. The close-fitting ground glass stopper has a capillary tube through it so that air bubbles may escape from the apparatus. Thus a liquid's weight can be measured accurately using an analytical balance. The flask is weighed empty, full of water, and full of a liquid whose relative density is desired (the unknown blue liquid in this case). Then the relative density of the liquid can be calculated.
