Caption

Preparing a scanning electron microscope. Researcher preparing to place a cicada (centre) inside the scanning chamber of a scanning electron microscope. This device uses electrons to view objects at magnifications much higher than can be obtained using light waves. The object being scanned needs to be able to conduct electricity, and so it is coated in a suitable metal, here gold.
