Miscibility and solubility. Here the test tube contains cyclohexane (C6H12) and water (H2O). Cyclohexane is a non-polar organic solvent and is lighter than water. Therefore it is not miscible with water and floats on top of it. Non-polar covalent-bonded iodine (I2) dissolved in cyclohexane (giving it violet colour) but did not dissolve in water, staying at the bottom of the test tube and showing only a faint brown colour. This photo demonstrates a commonly used (if not strictly accurate) rule that like dissolves like.
