This axial (cross sectional) contrast enhanced CT image through the upper neck at the level of the tongue base shows enlarged bilateral upper cervical lymph nodes and the palatine tonsils in this 17 year old with infectious mononucleosis which is caused by the EB (Epstein-Barr) virus. This results in enlargement of the lymph nodes within the neck as well as the adenoids and tonsils.
