Wound care. Medical professional caring for an open wound on the ankle of a patient at a wound care unit. The patient is undergoing maggot therapy, which uses maggots to clean the wound. The maggots are packed and bound into the open wound where they eat only the dead tissue allowing the healthy tissue to heal. The device in the foreground is a vacuum pump used in negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). The vacuum is used to promote healing by relieving pressure on the wound and drawing out excess fluid and cellular waste.
