Cisplatin cancer drug and DNA molecule. Molecular model of Cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug used to treat some forms of cancer, binding (red glow) to DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, grey and blue). It is an inorganic molecule arranged around an ion of the metal platinum (Pt). The drug's chemical formula is H6.Cl2.N2.Pt. This molecular model has spheres for atoms and is colour-coded: hydrogen (silver), nitrogen (blue) and platinum (red). The chlorine atoms are not seen, as the binding of the cisplatin to DNA removes them. Cisplatin slows cancer growth by interfering with the cell's DNA repair mechanism, which eventually leads to cell death.
