Curtiss F9C-2 'Sparrowhawk' fighter plane. Curtiss F9C-2 Sparrowhawk fighter being piloted by Lieutenant D. Ward Harrigan, whilst hanging from the trapeze (upper centre) of the USS Macon airship during flight operations. The Sparrowhawk was a light biplane fighter used by the US Navy airships USS Akron and Macon. It was a 'parasite' fighter, designed to be deployed from a larger aircraft such as an airship or bomber. Photographed in 1933.
